Majau: The Harvest Tale – A New Chapter in Sarawak’s Animation Scene
In the growing world of Sarawak animation, a new locally produced short film is setting a fresh benchmark for creative storytelling: Majau: The Harvest Tale. Developed entirely by the animation team at Muse Visual (a Motion Foundry studio), this project brings together folklore, environmental themes, and indigenous music—all told through the magic of animation.

A Homegrown Animation Made With Heart
Majau is not just a film—it’s a full in-house production. Over four months, our Muse Visual team handled everything from concept development to final animation. The story, character designs, music scoring, voiceovers, and motion graphics were all crafted by our own Sarawakian talents.
Drawing inspiration from Borneo’s ancestral stories and the traditional sounds of the Sape, we created an emotionally rich narrative. At the center is Balan, a humble farmer, who must confront ancient wind spirits to restore balance to his dying village and save his beloved wife, Bungan. With a magical Sape passed down through generations, he embarks on a spiritual journey to bring life back to the land.

Sarawak Animation Rooted in Cultural Storytelling
What sets Majau apart is its deep cultural identity. From the very beginning, we aimed to highlight the richness of Sarawak folklore through animated storytelling. The use of local musical instruments, voice acting inspired by native dialects, and visual symbolism rooted in Bornean beliefs allowed us to build a story that resonates both emotionally and culturally.
This project also demonstrates what’s possible when Sarawak animation studios push the boundaries of narrative, form, and style. It’s a celebration of what can happen when we tell our own stories, with our own voices, and our own craft.
